For awhile now, Costco has periodically stocked a flat Jack-in-the-Box-style crispy taco from Don Lee Farms. They came in chicken and pork. And now Trader Joe’s is bringing us a vegetarian/vegan version with its Crispy Potato and Poblano Pepper Tacos.
The filling is mashed potato and roasted poblano chile. So don’t go in expecting crispy potatoes. I opted for the air fryer and brought the temp down slightly. 380F for 8 minutes, turning at the half way point. Let the shell be your guide if you need an extra minute, the edges will get slightly golden.
The shells do crisp up pretty nicely. But they don’t open that easily, unless you do it the second they come out of the airfryer. So don’t expect to easily stuff these with a lot more. I did manage to sprinkle in some cheese. The filling amount doesn’t look like much, but didn’t seem skimpy when you bite into it. The poblano does bring a little kick, but not a lot. So unless you’re pretty sensitive to chiles, I wouldn’t worry about it. In fact, you’ll probably want more salsa. But as always, YMMV.
The ingredient list is pretty straightforward, but does include palm oil (boo). Each taco is 120 calories and clocks in with 6g of fat. I could have eaten all 3 easily.
For me, these are waaaaaaay better than the last version of TJ’s mini tacos, which were just disappointing. Would I buy TJ’s Crispy Potato and Poblano Tacos again? Yeah. Nice to have around for a snack or after a late night out. 😀
