Romantic Comedy + 8 More Anticipated April Releases for your TBR

The Spring reading season is already heating up, even if it’s still in the low 40s in Seattle. Someone send Spring for real, please. I’ve got a review of Curtis Sittenfeld’s Romantic Comedy for you, along with a mix of contemporary fic with romantic elements and romance ready for your TBR. Expect reviews for these over the coming weeks!

I didn’t think I was ready for a book that starts in 2018 and jumps to 2020-mid pandemic. But Curtis Sittenfeld convinced me otherwise. Romantic Comedy is smart, funny, and straddles that line between women’s fiction and romance. It’s a writer’s novel for writers. And it’s gonna be a perfect beach read this spring and summer.

Sally Minz is an Emmy award winning writer on an SNL-esque show, Noah Brewster is this week’s host/musical guest. The develop a rapport, but Sally’s theory that the hot guy never goes for the smart, but average woman, keeps her from believing there could really be anything there. Two years later, in the midst of the pandemic, Noah emails her out of nowhere. And they develop an epistolary relationship. I might be a GenX’er, but that it develops over email feels old school even to me. But then again, Sally isn’t one for the brevity of texts.

The inside baseball/ behind the scenes of the making of the show is fun. though I wonder how many millennial readers really care in an era where you just watch the show highlights on Hulu or YouTube.

I enjoyed this one! If you liked Elissa Sussman’s Funny You Should Ask and Kate Clayborn’s Georgie, All Along, this one will be right up your alley.
