Spring Must Read: Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Dial A for Aunties illustrated cover with a yellow background shows a part Asian woman straight on, in a green dress talking on a cell phone. Her right hand is on her hip. 2 older women wearing glasses or sunglasses peek over her shoulders on each side.

Over-the-top, ridiculous, and straight up hilarious – I loved it.

After her mom impersonates her on a dating app, Meddy Chan goes on a bad date with a rich hotelier and he’s accidentally killed.

Not knowing what to do, Meddy puts the body in her trunk and enlists the help of her mom and aunties to hide the body.

Things go from bad to worse when the catering freezer he’s stored in shipped to the next wedding Meddy’s family is coordinating. “Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans.”

While this one is filed under romance, and it does have an HEA, this is really a dark (family) comedy. The laughs won’t hit everyone the same way, but if you’re an Asian American reader, I bet the family dynamics and the relationships among the aunties hit close to home. We’re not Indo-Chinese like Meddy’s family, but I know my mom and aunties would definitely rally to help me hide a body. Did I say that out loud?

I couldn’t resist recreating the cover, we get so few opportunities to do it!

Actually laugh-out-loud funny, Dial A for Aunties delivers an escape from reality we all need. It’s a Spring (Summer, Fall, Winter) must read. I’m 100% not surprised the book is already in development as a series for Netflix. I can’t wait.

Grade: A-/B+
