The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

In Farrah Rochon’s The Boyfriend Project, the real meet (not so) cute is between three women who discover they’re dating the same guy. They catch him out and the confrontation goes viral on Twitter. It’s the catalyst for friendship these successful women didn’t expect.

Samiah Brooks is a fast-rising software engineer. And while she loves her job (and the perks!) at one of the hottest tech firms in Austin, she’s also been thinking about developing her own app on the side.

Daniel Collins is the new guy who joins the Research & Development department. And though a relationship isn’t on Samiah’s checklist, she has to admit, he’s pretty cute. But Daniel isn’t your average programmer. And getting involved with someone at the office is usually a no-no.

The Boyfriend Project has a real sense of place, even if you’ve only been to Austin a few times, like me. You know what Dirty Sixth looks like and what it’s like to walk around downtown. It shines with its focus on career, friendships and women in technology (BRAVO!!!). And it has just enough software development jargon and nerdery to be believable, says the gal who used to work in tech PR, but isn’t an engineer.

While you could call it an office romance because so much the action goes down there, TBP is romantic women’s fiction (with an HEA). It’s a great descriptor, one Farrah used herself in a recent live event with BookPeople. When I initially read it, I went in expecting straight contemporary romance. Samiah and Daniel’s relationship develops very (maybe, too?) organically, so from the midpoint, pacing was an issue for me. Both on the pair getting together, and on the execution of the conflict.

The Boyfriend Project is a solid start to a series. I mean, I hope it’s a series. We need to check in on Taylor and London. Someone needs to bump into Craig still trying to run his game. You know that fool hasn’t learned his lesson.
