DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME by Mhairi McFarlane

I capital “A” ADORED Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane. Hilarious, insightful and a perfect example of next-generation contemporary fiction (you might call it women’s fic or chick-lit, I won’t). For me, her story about Georgina Horspool, a 30-year old who’s still getting her life on track and ends up bumping into a first love who doesn’t recognize her, had more in common with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s show Fleabag than characters from Sophie Kinsella, Helen Fielding or Jojo Moyes.

McFarlane’s next book, If I Never Met You, comes out March 24, 2020.

BROOKLYNAIRE by Sarina Bowen

Set in Sarina Bowen’s Brooklyn Bruisers hockey world, Brooklynaire follows tech wunderkind and team owner Nate and Becca, who’s been on his team since his startup days. But Nate is no tech bro and he’s no typical fictional billionaire, either. He has a job and owns a company you can actually understand, and he actually goes to work over the course of the story. This one’s a slow burner, and it’s one of my very favorite in the Bruisers world.

THE KEY TO HAPPILY EVER AFTER by Tif Marcelo

Tif Marcelo jumped from romance to contemporary fiction with The Key to Happily Ever After. The story is about three Filipina sisters who run a wedding planning business and grapple with finding their own happily ever afters. Part wedding reality show, part family drama, The Key to Happily Ever is as much about making it through one wedding season as it is about finding your place in your family. Sweet and uplifting without going full Hallmark, it’s one to add to your TBR for sure.

Tif Marcelo’s next book, Once Upon a Sunset, hits shelves on March 3, 2020.

PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND OTHER FLAVORS by Sonali Dev

I admit I’m guilty of having bought but not read Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors, the first book in a series about an Indian American family descended from royalty. So let’s go to the blurb:
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep.

Dr. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family who’s achieved power by making its own non-negotiable rules:

·       Never trust an outsider

·       Never do anything to jeopardize your brother’s political aspirations

·       And never, ever, defy your family

Trisha is guilty of breaking all three rules. But now she has a chance to redeem herself. So long as she doesn’t repeat old mistakes.

Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. He needs the lucrative job the Rajes offer, but he values his pride too much to indulge Trisha’s arrogance. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.

As the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. But before a future can be savored there’s a past to be reckoned with…

A family trying to build home in a new land.

A man who has never felt at home anywhere.

And a choice to be made between the two.

The next book in the series, Recipe for Persuasion, comes out May 26, 2020.

THE DINNER LIST by Rebecca Serle

The Dinner List is the book that found me crying in the lobby of a tire shop while I waited for my car to be worked on. Centered on the idea of, who are the five people living or dead, you’d want to have dinner with, The Dinner List is a magical meditation on love, disappointment, grief and all the things that go unsaid.

For Sabrina her five includes her best friend, three people from her past…and Audrey Hepburn?

Beautiful, heartbreaking, unexpected and illuminating. I loved it.

Serle’s next book, In Five Years, comes out March 10, 2020.
