In the fifth book in Kate Khavari’s Saffron Everleigh series, Saffron and Alexander head to Turkey on expedition. Not long after arriving, Saffron finds herself in the cross hairs of local police and the prime suspect in a murder. A Botanist’s Guide to Tradition and Treachery, out today, gives us not just a change of scenery, but a bit of turnabout, as Alexander steps up to investigate the circumstances of the murder.

I loved that this installment takes Saffron and Alexander out of London, but it also feels like it took a little longer than typical to get to the murder (about 50% in). It also put a spotlight on a character I hope we’ll see again: Mrs. Henry. As the wife of the expedition leader, she’s very much an influential behind-the-scenes force.

Although I usually let mysteries wash over me, I figured out the killer this time, though I didn’t expect the motive.

As I’ve said before, I especially love this series on audiobook, and Jodie Harris’ narration is fantastic as always. Highly recommend.

Fair warning: If you thought the misogyny and sexism in book 1 was bad, Saffron is on the receiving end of it again, despite being a qualified researcher who had to apply to join this expedition.

This is a series that’s going strong and I can’t wait to see what Kate Khavari comes up with next for Saffron and Alexander.
