If you need a bright burst of winter sunshine, grab a pint of Trader Joe’s Calamansi & Mango Sorbet. Calamansi is a Filipino citrus, whose flavor is sometimes described as a mix of lime, lemon, and orange. I didn’t grow up with calamansi, but here it’s generally citrusy with a very slight bitterness, like you’d get from the pith. I like that, but YMMV.
I can’t say I get any direct mango flavor, but it’s gotta be mellowing the citrus kick of the calamansi. It’s refreshing and not overly sweet (and you know most of the time I find Trader Joe’s desserts pretty sweet). It scoops like a sorbet, so it sort of holds together, but is still a little icy. I can see it being good in a shortbread/sugar cookie ice cream sandwich. Or on its own as dessert after a rich meal.
It’s vegan and marked kosher UDE. The ingredient list is pretty straightforward. Would I buy Trader Joe’s Calamansi & Mango Sorbet again? Yeah, I think so. I’m usually more of an ice cream person, so I’m hoping the Yuzu Ripple (also vegan) and Dark Chocolate Raspberry Swirl come back soon.
