We Tried Trader Joe’s Maple Poffertjes (Mini Pancake Puffs)

Cute food alert! I kinda can’t resist mini foods, and Trader Joe’s Maple Poffertjes, mini Dutch pancake puffs definitely fall into that category. Somewhat similar to Danish aebelskivers, both are cooked in special pans with half-sphere indentations.

Although everyone’s first inclination is to throw things in the air fryer, I opted to bake them. If you want them pancake-like, you don’t actually want them crispy on the outside, so oven it was.

Health food, they are not. Although there are 22g of fat per serving, the ingredient list is pretty straight-forward. I made 10 little pancakes and ate them myself, no problem. So a 13-pancake serving isn’t unreasonable. They’re best eaten hot. The maple is subtle, and since I like things on the less sweet side, they were perfect as is for me.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had aebelskivers, but these seemed more like American pancakes in texture, and less eggy. Though I have to say the puff does take these up a notch from your typical silver dollar pancakes.

Lingonberry jam on the side was a nice add (although the d’arbo brand from World Market really just tasted like cranberry sauce to me! That’s what I get for not driving to IKEA). You could also dip them in a little more maple syrup, if you like. Powdered sugar was mostly for the photo.

Would I buy Trader Joe’s Maple Poffertjes again? Maybe. They’re a fun novelty, but I’m more of a waffle gal.
