Orange is not typically my go-to flavor. And in most desserts it’s whatever, take-it-or-leave-it for me. But blood orange is something special. There’s something about that slightly berry note in it, maybe? So Trader Joe’s Blood Orange mochi ice cream? Into the basket it goes!

For me, the ice cream is somewhere between sherbet and orange creamsicle. And it does have that something just a little different. It’s not a fakey orange like Tang. It’s actually kind of hard to describe. They seemed to be a little quicker to melt as I was taking photos, but they came straight from the store, rather than sitting in the freezer overnight. So YMMV. But either way, delicious. I’m being careful about added sugar these days, so one was enough for me.
One interesting thing, and I can’t say it’s for sure new, because I haven’t been buying TJ’s mochi ice cream much lately. But check out the paper packaging. It still comes with a plastic peel-back cover (I should have only pulled it back halfway. Oops, oh well). But the mochi are sitting on a slight angle in the package. We’ll see how it holds up in the freezer, but I think it should be fine. And less plastic is always a good thing.

So would I buy Trader Joe’s Blood Orange Mochi ice cream again? Definitely. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did! This one is worth picking up. I know there’s been speculation that Bubbie’s is the company behind TJ’s mochi, and they do have a blood orange flavor, but at $4.99, I’m betting TJ’s is better deal price-wise. Get it while you can. Trader Joe’s has it marked “limited time” on their Web site. And while Christmas stuff is still kicking around at my local, I bet these will move.
