Trader Joe’s new Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake has no right to be as good as it is. It’s two layers of white cake with custard sandwiched between them, frosted with whipped cream. And finally topped with strawberries. Housed in a plastic dome, the box advises letting it thaw for 24 hours before consuming. But make sure you keep it label side up, so it’s not dropping on its face. As usual, probably not totally necessary to wait the full 24 hours.
The pic below is within a few hours of bringing it home. I wanted to see what the frozen strawberries looked like, and while you can tell they’ve been frozen for a bit, the strawberry goo covering them camouflages it a little bit.

So here’s the cake after 24 hours. The whipped cream holds up well, it slices nicely. And that strawberry topping tastes like those strawberry puree bricks (with sugar) you used to be able to get in the frozen section in the 80s. So it definitely has the taste of nostalgia to it (at least for me). The whipped cream is very good. If this were an American product, I’d expect it to taste more like Reddi-whip, but although this must have stabilizers in it, it tastes pretty real.

Would I buy it again? Yeah, I would. Although the thaw time doesn’t make it something you can just roll by and grab on the way to a get together, I like it a lot. Do I like it more than the Strawberry Mini Sheet Cake? Well…kind of hard to compare, but between the two, if you like whipped cream frosting, I’d pick the cloud cake.
