Baring It All, Down to the Turkey Meatballs

Here’s the deal. Meatballs are not pretty. They’re like most of us – dented on one side, browned but splotchy, hiding beneath a red sauce, and hoping everyone is distracted by the parmesan sprinkled over the top.  F that.  Today, we’re stripping it bare, because what do you have to hide? A meatball is a meatball, and done right, there’s no shame in it.  I’m not your nonna and this isn’t Sunday where we have all day to cook a gravy, so let’s make some Greek-inspired, Spinach and Feta Turkey Meatballs.

Almost Grandma’s Tamale Pie

  If you think back about eating at your grandparents’ house, do you associate certain foods with the dishes they were served in? In my grandma’s kitchen, there were two things that were made in a big white Corningware baking dish.  You know the one, square ceramic with a blue cornflower design on the side.  There was the dish I’d like to forget but can’t – tuna casserole with a potato chip topping. And there was tamale pie.

The Berliner – Doner Kebab in Seattle

The last few days have been completely amazing in Seattle. Sunny as all get out. You don't know how exciting sunshine is until you haven't had it for awhile. On Saturday in all that beautiful sunshine, we headed downtown with a plan to stuff our faces, first at Sweet Iron, a newish liege waffle place we hadn't yet tried, and then to hit The Berliner, a doner kebab joint in Pioneer Square.

A Proud Moment in 2011: Giada’s “Let’s Get Cooking” Photo Contest

2011 was the year my friend Nicole turned me onto Tastespotting and inspired me to get serious about the photography on this blog. Rather than just looking to the posts for culinary inspiration, I started studying the photos on the site, how people were styling and lighting the food. I started looking at food mags in a totally different way. I read about how hard it was to get photos accepted and I took my lumps with critiques on (under)exposure and composition, but once I managed to get photos accepted on both Tastespotting and Foodgawker, a light clicked on. All that led me to enter a photo contest Giada de Laurentiis sponsored on Facebook.
