A pitch perfect beach read!<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re a mega-fan of 90s rom-coms, you and Waiting for Tom Hanks<\/a> (June 11; Berkley Romance) by Kerry Winfrey are M-F-E-O. Made For Each Other.  <\/span>It\u2019s a supercute (and totally self-aware) homage to the genre, with nods to everything from Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally to Notting Hill to The Wedding Singer. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a book so timely it comments on how homogeneous rom-coms are but that we\u2019re starting to see things change with the success of To All the Boys I\u2019ve Loved Before and Crazy Rich Asians. (You should also go watch Always Be My Maybe on Netflix, if you haven’t already).<\/span><\/p>\n

Annie is a freelance writer whose whole perspective on relationships is shaped by the rom-coms she grew up watching with her mom. She\u2019s watched You\u2019ve Got Mail 100 times and can quote it on command. Annie meets Drew Danforth on a movie set in Columbus, Ohio. He\u2019s the star, she\u2019s fallen into a job as the director\u2019s assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can tell when an author has a real affinity for her subject. Kerry Winfrey clearly knows her rom-coms (check out the Tumblr she wrote \u201cA Year of Rom-Coms\u201d <\/span><\/a>if you have any doubt). Annie and Drew\u2019s story hits all the rom-com beats: the meet cute, the banter, the misunderstandings, the grand gesture and even the sprint to the finish. The cast is rounded out by Annie\u2019s bestie\/sidekick Chloe and the coffee shop co-worker who\u2019s crushing on Chloe big time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiting for Tom Hanks doesn’t just honor classic rom-coms, it straight up celebrates them. It’s charming, delightful and a summer must-read. I can already tell this is one I\u2019ll revisit again and again, just like my favorite movie rom-coms. People always say reading a book is like watching a movie in your head. That’s 100 percent true with Waiting for Tom Hanks. Pop yourself some popcorn, grab a gallon of Diet Coke and get ready for a cinematic experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

EXCERPT FROM WAITING FOR TOM HANKS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I blink a few times, staring straight into Drew Danforth\u2019s face. It\u2019s like when you\u2019re a kid and there\u2019s a solar eclipse, and all the teachers are like, \u201cDon\u2019t look directly into the sun! You\u2019ll destroy your retinas!\u201d but there\u2019s always that one kid (Johnny Berger, in our class) who can\u2019t stop staring.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this situation, I\u2019m Johnny Berger. And I guess Drew Danforth is the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAre you okay?\u201d he asks again, enunciating his words even more as if me understanding him is the problem. His brown eyes, I notice, are flecked with tiny bits of gold, which is something you can\u2019t see when you watch him on TV. His hair is just as voluminous as it seems in pictures, but in person, I have the almost overwhelming urge to touch it, to reach out and pull on that one lock of hair that hangs over his forehead.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not responding.\u201d He turns to Chloe. \u201cIs something wrong?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s French,\u201d Chloe says without missing a beat. \u201cShe only speaks French.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not French,\u201d I say, breaking my silence. Chloe and Drew\u2019s heads swivel to look at me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry about your coat,\u201d I whisper, then I run toward Nick\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chloe bursts in the door behind me, the bell jingling in her wake. \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m not French<\/i><\/span>?\u201d she screeches. \u201cThose are the first words you spoke to Drew Danforth? Really?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell then, why did you tell him I was French?\u201d I shout, ignoring the curious stares of everyone working on their laptops and the calming melody of whatever Nick put on to replace the Doobies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d She throws her hands in the air. \u201cYou weren\u2019t talking, so I thought I\u2019d give you an interesting backstory!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I put my hands over my face. \u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Chloe says, grabbing me by the shoulders. \u201cThis is your meet-cute, and now you need to go back out there and find him and say something that isn\u2019t a negation of your Frenchness or an apology for destroying his probably very expensive coat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMeet what?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nick stares at us from behind the counter, a dishtowel in his hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA meet-cute,\u201d Chloe stands up straight, shoulders back, as if she\u2019s delivering a Romantic Comedy 101 lecture to Nick and his patrons, \u201cis the quirky, adorable, <\/span>cute <\/i><\/span>way the hero and heroine of a romantic comedy meet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone stares at her blankly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOr hero and hero. Or heroine and heroine. Not to be heteronormative,\u201d she clarifies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike how me and Martha met at her wedding,\u201d Gary says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chloe thinks about it. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I would necessarily call that one a meet-<\/span>cute<\/i><\/span>, but sure, Gary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDid you just make that up?\u201d Nick asks, arms crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n

I shake my head. \u201cNo. It\u2019s a thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWatch a romantic comedy, dude,\u201d Tobin says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nick rolls his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway,\u201d Chloe continues, \u201cAnnie straight up ran into Drew Danforth and spilled a cup of coffee all over his coat, which is, like, the cutest of meets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound very cute,\u201d Nick says skeptically, rubbing the scruff on his chin. \u201cWas it still hot?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cScalding,\u201d I say, sinking into my chair and resting my head on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSounds like a meet painful,\u201d says Gary, and a few people laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThanks,\u201d I mutter. \u201cI\u2019m so glad you all find my embarrassment entertaining.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnnie!\u201d Chloe sits down across from me as a customer walks in and the rest of the shop stops paying attention to us. \u201cThis isn\u2019t embarrassing. This is merely a story I\u2019ll tell in my toast at your wedding to Drew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I lift my head to look at her. \u201cI hate to break this to you, but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s my Tom Hanks. I think he\u2019s just a famous guy with a possible third-degree burn on his chest. And now my first day on set is going to be super awkward because I accidentally assaulted the lead actor with a beverage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chloe\u2019s about to say something, but then a song starts and she closes her mouth, looking up toward the speakers. \u201cI swear to God, I told Nick not to play any more Bon Iver. It makes people look up their exes on Instagram, not buy coffee. I\u2019m gonna go put on some Hall and Oates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As she walks away, I rest my head on the table again. As if it wasn\u2019t embarrassing enough to have my uncle get me a job on set, now I have to deal with this.<\/span><\/p>
