You know the one, she asks, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you write me?!\u201d He tells her he wrote her everyday, 365 letters. She\u2019s flummoxed\u2026and then he says, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t over\u2026.it still isn\u2019t over!!\u201d I wail every time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GHNKCk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love and Other Words<\/a>, out today, elicits the same feeling.\u00a0 I absolutely loved this book.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Love and Other Words gives you the feels, alllllll the feels, all the feels times infinity. I kid you not. For anyone who says, &#8220;Ehhh, I don&#8217;t really read women&#8217;s fiction, I say, when Christina Lauren writes it you do.&#8221;\u00a0 If you\u2019re here for the romance, you\u2019ll get it and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Told in alternating then-and-now timelines, we meet teenage Macy and Elliot as weekend neighbors in Healdsburg, and as adults who haven\u2019t spoken for more than a decade, after a chance meeting in San Francisco. Christina Lauren captures the anticipation, nerves and hormones of adolescent love beautifully, with a realism that&#8217;s like a time machine back to your teenage years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a reader, you experience <i>and<\/i> reflect on the bloom of young love at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the now timeline, Macy\u2019s doing her residency and living with Sean, who\u2019s a successful artist. That it\u2019s an easy, but boring relationship feels a little convenient, but the alternatives might have taken this into story into dealbreaker territory, at least for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As Christina Lauren\u2019s first foray into women\u2019s fiction, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GHNKCk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love and Other Words<\/a> is still very much in their wheel house. It taps into the emotional core of the story with ease. Very often, young Macy and Elliot are a lot more honest with each other than any of us can be as adults. Christina Lauren said they came up with these characters seven years ago, but you can see the progressive build in their books. It is time for Macy and Elliot. Get ready for a decent, but not perfect diagram, because I&#8217;m a nerd like that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload_inited aligncenter wp-image-16385 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-05-at-5.11.53-PM-300x287.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-05-at-5.11.53-PM-300x287.png 300w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-05-at-5.11.53-PM-600x574.png 600w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-05-at-5.11.53-PM.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qaHNUf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sublime<\/a> is missing, but go with me on this. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JrgCws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The House <\/a>was sort of its own YA\/horror thing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2q72NLN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beautiful<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qeQ9t8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild Seasons series<\/a> showed us again and again they know to write romance that singes your eyebrows off and makes you laugh; <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2017\/09\/07\/autoboyography-by-christina-lauren-5-star-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autoboyography<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2017\/06\/06\/5-stars-dating-you-hating-you-by-christina-lauren-review\/\">Dating You Hating You<\/a> added social issues to the mix. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2017\/12\/04\/christina-lauren-roomies\/\">Roomies<\/a> was somewhere in between: a romance, plus a heroine who\u2019s closer with her uncles than her actual parents. But at heart, all are love stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GHNKCk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love and Other Words <\/a>is the next evolution of Christina Lauren\u2019s work. It taps everything they wrote before it. Love and Other Words adds rich emotional complexity as it captures how indelible experiences like first love, heartbreak, and loss bear out in life 10 years later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It packs a poignant emotional punch that leaves you longing\u2026.and hoping that Macy and Elliot can overcome what kept them from talking for a decade. Hoping that Macy\u2019s entire world view about love isn\u2019t misguided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GHNKCk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love and Other Words<\/a> is beautiful and heart-tugging and idealistic. I can already tell this is going to be a comfort read (not unlike watching The Notebook), that I come back to time and again. That I can drop into anywhere in the book and enjoy.
