{"id":12983,"date":"2016-05-17T07:05:56","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T14:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/?p=12983"},"modified":"2018-07-29T08:27:15","modified_gmt":"2018-07-29T15:27:15","slug":"feast-tofino-food-fest-west-coast-style-lblr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/feast-tofino-food-fest-west-coast-style-lblr\/","title":{"rendered":"Feast Tofino: Food Fest West Coast Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re driving to Tofino, British Columbia, the last major leg\u00a0is the pass connecting Port Alberni with Ucluelet and Tofino. It\u2019s a windy road and in the winter, chains are required. The thing is, that\u2019s until the end of March. But then, April stretches into May and it\u2019s Spring \u2013 harvest time on British Columbia\u2019s West Coast.<\/p>\n<p>On that\u00a0side of the pass, it\u2019s not harvest from the land so much as from the ocean. Tofino celebrates with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feasttofino.com\/\">Feast Tofino<\/a>, an event now in its sixth year. Teaming\u00a0Tofino and out-of-town chefs, the event offers a mix of intimate dinners, a boat-to-tailgate party and even overnight kayaking and backcountry dirt biking events. This year\u2019s Feast runs May 6-22, with a closing event, the Pescetarian Pilau on the Beach, on May 29.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that I\u2019m not a huge seafood eater, I\u2019ve wanted to check out Feast for the last couple of years and finally synced up our nearly annual trip to\u00a0Tofino with\u00a0the first week of this year\u2019s Feast. We packed up the car, threw our black lab\u00a0Finn into the back, and hopped a ferry to Nanaimo. You know, just a hop, skip and a jump, if a drive from Seattle to Vancouver is hop, a 2-hour ferry crossing is a skip and getting across the pass is a jump.<\/p>\n<p>Worth the effort? Heck yeah.\u00a0\u00a0(Vancouverites are lucky enough to be able to fly direct if they&#8217;re of a mind to).<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachlodgeresort.com\">Long Beach Lodge Resort<\/a>, Chef Ian Riddick teamed up with visiting Chef Amanda Cohen of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dirtcandynyc.com\/\">New York City\u2019s DirtCandy<\/a> and delivered a six-course extravaganza that spotlighted his strengths in local seafood and hers in making the most of Vancouver Island produce. Set in the Lodge\u2019s Great Room, the dinner had a gorgeous early evening view of Cox Bay and featured wines from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluemountainwinery.com\/\">Blue Mountain Winery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huggingtreewinery.com\">Hugging Tree Winery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.morainewinery.com\">Moraine Winery<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinhorn.com\">Tinhorn Creek Vineyards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With about\u00a018 guests (I didn&#8217;t count, but that&#8217;s what it was supposed to max out at), the chefs&#8217; dinner had a more intimate feel and gave you the opportunity to hear from the chefs directly on each course.
