Although Chef Holly Smith and team continue to be recognized nationally for outstanding food and service, it still feels like a not-so-secret secret that&#8217;s just for us Eastsiders.\u00a0Instead of having to cross the bridge to go into Seattle, we can bring in out-of-town friends and know we&#8217;ll have a fantastic night.<\/p>\n<p>Right about now, we&#8217;re all starting to come\u00a0out of hibernation. Restaurant menus are getting refreshed after several months of root vegetables, greens\u00a0and hearty meats. \u00a0The menu for our dinner the other night had a bit of a\u00a0shoulder season feel\u00a0&#8212; fresh asparagus, porcini mushrooms, lamb &#8212; paired with a gorgeous selection of wines from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.la-spinetta.com\">La Spinetta<\/a>, a Piemonte-based winery which also has some acreage\u00a0in Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload_inited aligncenter size-full wp-image-12934\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cafe-juanita_la-spinetta-menudailywaffle.jpg\" alt=\"cafe juanita_la spinetta menu|dailywaffle\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cafe-juanita_la-spinetta-menudailywaffle.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cafe-juanita_la-spinetta-menudailywaffle-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cafe-juanita_la-spinetta-menudailywaffle-450x600.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Giorgio Rivetti, La Spinetta&#8217;s winemaker, joined the dinner to discuss his wines and share his sense of what makes Piemontese wine so unique (it&#8217;s all about farmers!). \u00a0This was my first experience\u00a0with La Spinetta&#8217;s wines, while many of my fellow dinner guests were already\u00a0huge fans. After tasting the wines, it&#8217;s not hard to see why.<\/p>\n<p>Fair warning, there are six\u00a0courses of straight food porn ahead and having eaten them on a regular, no special occasion Wednesday night feels like a bit of a splurge. But as Donna said on <em>Parks and Rec,<\/em> &#8220;Treat Yo Self.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The meal kicked off with an apertivi of quail egg with white sturgeon caviar, piment and pumpernickel crisps paired with La Spinetta&#8217;s 2010 Contratto, an extra brut sparkler. Bellissima! I&#8217;d try to impress you with my limited, food words-based understanding of Italian, but caviar and pumpernickel weren&#8217;t among the flash cards I made before our last trip. In a more casual dish, I could see spreading it on crostini, eating it with scrambled eggs, licking it off the plate. \u00a0Fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>Asparagus always seems like a tough one to pair with wine, but La Spinetta&#8217;s rose &#8211; half sangiovese, half prugnolo gentile &#8211; was a lovely complement, and heads and shoulders above most new world rose I&#8217;ve had.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12932\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/plugins\/trx_addons\/components\/lazy-load\/images\/placeholder.png\" data-trx-lazyload-height style=\"height: 0; padding-top: 133.4%;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12932\" data-trx-lazyload-src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cafe-juanita_chilled-asparagus-with-parmigiano-mousse.jpg\" alt=\"Chilled asparagus, mousse di Parmigiano-Reggiano with chive blossoms Paired with 2015 La Spinetta Rose di Casanova\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\"   \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chilled asparagus, mousse di Parmigiano-Reggiano with chive blossoms<br \/>Paired with 2015 La Spinetta Rose di Casanova<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mushroom soup never sounds or looks all that amazing, but in the hands of the team at Cafe Juanita, they&#8217;ve kicked it with creme fraiche and the result is a cup of soup I&#8217;d order again in a heartbeat. This course was paired with La Spinetta&#8217;s 2006 &#8216;Valeirano&#8217; Barbaresco, which still had a lot to recommend it. I can never help myself when it comes to pastas at Cafe Juanita. I dive in as soon as they hit the table and the gnocchi was no exception. Hence, no photos.
