Not surprising, right? The wet, chilly weather that dominates the PNW most of the year makes mass coffee consumption a given. What that weather doesn\u2019t require is local roasting and attention to detail in every step of the coffee brewing process. And that\u2019s what you get at <a href=\"http:\/\/revolvercoffee.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revolver<\/a> in Vancouver\u2019s Gastown neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Revolver makes each coffee to order with \u00a0two daily espresso choices &#8212; Calgary&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philsebastian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phil and Sebastian<\/a> (I keep wanting to say Belle &amp; Sebastian) and Vancouver\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matchstickcoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matchstick Coffee Roasters<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; on one of the days we were there.\u00a0The goal here isn\u2019t to churn out four grande lattes from a huge pitcher of scalded milk.\u00a0 If you\u2019re looking to mainline caffeine and get in and out as fast as possible, save a trip to Revolver for when you&#8217;ve got more than a few minutes. This is thoughtful coffee making, designed as much for drinking a quality cup as the meditation of seeing it made.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2014\/01\/26\/vancouver-bc-buckwheat-fig-sweet-rolls-revolver-coffee\/revolver-coffee-french-press-dailywaffle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11777\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload_inited aligncenter size-full wp-image-11777\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-french-press-dailywaffle.jpg\" alt=\"revolver coffee french press| dailywaffle\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-french-press-dailywaffle.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-french-press-dailywaffle-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What it is not, is an early morning exercise.\u00a0 Revolver opens weekdays at 7:30 and on Saturday at 9 a.m., and is CLOSED on Sunday. Plan accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Along with your coffee, Revolver has a small selection of baked goods, including a killer coffee cake \u2013 raspberry and something on our two visits &#8212; and something called a Pioneer Roll, a buckwheat sweet roll filled with fig (and possibly date) jam. A little Internet sleuthing suggests they might come from Vancouver&#8217;s Cafe Crema.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2014\/01\/26\/vancouver-bc-buckwheat-fig-sweet-rolls-revolver-coffee\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11778\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload_inited aligncenter size-large wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle.jpg\" alt=\"revolver coffee latte | dailywaffle\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/revolver-coffee-latte-dailywaffle-94x94.jpg 94w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>People are inevitably put off by the grayish-brown hue of buckwheat and you might not think its earthy flavor is a fit for breakfast, but it works. \u00a0It&#8217;s got a lot going for it nutritionally as a source of fiber, magnesium as well as Omega 3s and 6s. So of course, as soon as we got home, I started googling for similar recipes. Surprisingly, there aren\u2019t many buckwheat cinnamon roll-type recipes out there, even among the gluten-free blogs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2014\/01\/26\/vancouver-bc-buckwheat-fig-sweet-rolls-revolver-coffee\/buckwheat-fig-pioneer-roll-tic-tac-dough-dailywaffle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11794\"><img src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/plugins\/trx_addons\/components\/lazy-load\/images\/placeholder.png\" data-trx-lazyload-height style=\"height: 0; padding-top: 100%;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11794\" data-trx-lazyload-src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/buckwheat-fig-pioneer-roll-tic-tac-dough-dailywaffle.jpg\" alt=\"buckwheat fig pioneer roll tic tac dough| dailywaffle\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"   \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This version, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.101cookbooks.com\/archives\/figgy-buckwheat-scones-recipe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adapted from a Good to the Grain recipe on 101 Cookbooks<\/a> is not gluten-free, though you could easily replace the AP flour with a standard gluten-free AP mix and have a go at it.<\/p>\n<p>The dough will inevitably stick, so flour your board generously, use a board scraper (or the back of a pancake turner) to help unstick it, and be careful not to overwork the dough.\u00a0 At heart, these are biscuits, not a yeast dough, and so will get tough on you right quick if you overdo it.
