Farmed by the Haraguchi family for five generations, the fields are situated on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/hanalei\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge<\/a> which is home to a variety of endangered birds, including the Hawaiian nene and moorhens.<\/p>\n<p>Taro, a root vegetable brought to Hawaii by Polynesians, was a primary starch in the traditional Hawaiian diet and continues to be a cultural touchstone. If your only association with taro is the poi you once had at a luau, a tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haraguchiricemill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ho&#8217;opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill and Taro Farm<\/a> will go a long way in giving you a new appreciation for this tuber.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2013\/03\/19\/a-different-taste-of-taro-in-hanalei\/hanalei-taro-and-juice-truck-dailywaffle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10530\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload_inited aligncenter size-full wp-image-10530\" alt=\"hanalei taro and juice truck | dailywaffle\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/hanalei-taro-and-juice-truck-dailywaffle.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/hanalei-taro-and-juice-truck-dailywaffle.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/hanalei-taro-and-juice-truck-dailywaffle-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coming into town, on your right you\u2019ll see the Hanalei Taro and Juice Company truck.\u00a0 They serve plate lunches and taro-based eats, including smoothies, hummus, taro burgers, mochi cake and kulolo, a baked taro pudding.\u00a0 This is where you\u2019ll meet up on a Wednesday morning if you\u2019ve reserved a spot for a tour of the rice mill and taro farm (advance reservations required).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/2013\/03\/19\/a-different-taste-of-taro-in-hanalei\/taro-fields-hanalei-dailywaffle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10523\"><img class=\"lazyload_inited\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"taro fields hanalei | dailywaffle\" src=\"https:\/\/dailywaffle.com\/stage1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/taro-fields-hanalei-dailywaffle.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The morning we took the tour, it was blazingly sunny, and it was easy to imagine what it would be like working in the fields under the hot Hawaiian sun, tending this labor-intensive, hand planted crop.
