We Tried Trader Joe’s Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns
I was skeptical when I saw that Trader Joe's newest dumpling was teriyaki-flavored. Teriyaki in a bao? I imagined a gloopy super sweet soy-based sauce overwhelming the veg filling. But now that I've tried Trader Joe's Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns? I think it's meant to be more of a shorthand toward a sweet,…

We Tried Trader Joe’s Hold the Corn Appetizers

Getting ready for New Year’s Eve? Trader Joe’s has several new frozen appetizers perfect for parties, including Hold the Corn cones. Inspired by the mini cones in the ice cream section, these savory appetizers are filled with corn, water chestnuts, coconut, wood ear mushrooms and green onions and flavored with chile peppers and lemongrass.

Trader Joe’s Hold the Corn! Appetizers are filled with corn, water chestnuts, coconut and wood ear mushrooms.

These cones are pretty straight forward. Put them on a cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until crispy.

The verdict? They’re fine, not amazing. If you like fried wontons, Hold the Corn! Appetizers will scratch that itch. The cone itself is made from rice and tapioca flours and have a nice crunch. They’re best enjoyed hot, but they hold their crunch pretty well once they’ve cooled down.

The box appears to show some kind of soy sauce-based dipping sauce, but I went with sweet chili sauce. Among the bottled versions, Mae Ploy brand is the best and is available in most supermarkets. If you want to make the sauce at home, Diana Kuan’s Red Hot Kitchen has a great recipe.
