Usually I am a Top Ramen girl (blue package forever), but I branched out and picked up a package of Nissin Raoh ramen – soy sauce flavor. The line actually comes in three flavors — soy sauce, tonkotsu and miso. But I picked this one up at some point before we all went into self-isolation. I’ve heard good things about the tonkotsu flavor. It’s being shipped to me, so stay tuned.
So, here’s the first thing about this ramen. The noodles aren’t fried. Instead they’re put through a triple layer air-drying process. The long and the short of is, it’s lower in fat. And delivers a chewy noodle closer to fresh quality. The sauce packet is liquid rather than powder.
Process-wise, while the noodles are boiling, you put the sauce packet in a bowl, add the water, then add the noodles. I cooked the noodles for three minutes instead of four.
I know lots of folks like to doctor up their ramen…add a hard boiled egg, some vegetables, etc. But for this taste test, we kept it simple. Just a little green onion.
Verdict: Honest to god, this is really good packet ramen. I like the chewiness of the noodles. The broth has a good, not too salty, soy sauce flavor. A real step up in terms of packet ramen, though I’ll always have a soft spot for Top Ramen.
