Trader Joe's Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns bag with bao on a red steamer basket
We Tried Trader Joe’s Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns
I was skeptical when I saw that Trader Joe's newest dumpling was teriyaki-flavored. Teriyaki in a bao? I imagined a gloopy super sweet soy-based sauce overwhelming the veg filling. But now that I've tried Trader Joe's Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns? I think it's meant to be more of a shorthand toward a sweet,…

We Tried Trader Joe’s Chocolate Salted Caramel Mug Cake

We Tried Trader Joe’s Chocolate Salted Caramel Mug Cake

The microwavable mug cake has been a Pinterest staple for years. Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker have their own versions. Trader Joe’s is getting in on the single-serve cake space with Trader Joe’s Chocolate Salted Caramel mug cake. Each box contains two single servings and goes for $1.99.

Trader Joe’s version comes with a packet of cake mix, which you combine with 3 tablespoons of water. Zap it in the microwave for 20 seconds and then you add two fleur de sel caramels included in the box and then zap it again. They seem to be the same caramels Trader Joe’s has around Christmastime and they’re sweet, salty buttery goodness on their own. My microwave is notoriously low powered, so it took a minute or so longer than the package instructions directed. Just make sure the top looks dry and springs back when you touch it. It’ll be easy to overcook it, so check it closely after the second zap.

Yes, you can tell it’s a box mix, but the ingredient list is actually pretty straightforward. Trader Joe’s Chocolate Salted Caramel mug cake is definitely chocolatey and rich. I didn’t get the same caramel pool pictured on the box, but it was a fine amount. Eat it quickly, because it does start to stick to the mug. Don’t expect it to come out cleanly like a cupcake.

Since all you’re adding is water, these cakes are perfect for chocolate emergencies at home or work. The checker at my Trader Joe’s said he was planning on taking it camping, since they’ve got a microwave in their camper. You never know how long things will stick around at Trader Joe’s, I’d grab a couple extra now for stocking stuffers at Christmas.
