I blew through New York City a couple of weeks ago, rolling in on a Red Eye Tuesday morning, and jetting out on Wednesday evening. Road warriors, I do not envy you. The red eye is a killer. Even with my short legs and an open row --3 seats worth of luxurious space -- the shuteye I got was somewhere just north of dozing. I checked into the hotel, flipped on the TV, and after a shower, I looked down onto the street below at what I can only describe as an oasis. Green letters emblazoned at street-level. In my best Homer Simpson voice, I said (it even may have been out loud), “Mmmmm. Coffeeeeee.”
It always makes me laugh that instant ramen is (dis)regarded as college food. It’s the savior for the days when you’re so broke you drink Keystone Light and survive on a 33 cent pack of noodles. You couldn't possibly eat it because...you like it. But as with so many foods from my childhood, maybe initially…
After we’re back from a vacation, I always find myself trying to hold on to a piece of it, checking the weather, reading the local news from wherever we’ve just been. After our trip to Tofino in August, I’ve found myself checking the Long Beach Lodge Resort’s Web cam with a view of the beach and Cox Bay and trying to recreate the chocolate-topped protein bars they serve as part of their complimentary continental breakfast. But calling them protein bars really sells them short. Would you believe me if I told you they taste good and they're actually pretty healthy?
Back of the bag recipes have sustained us for ages. Our grandmothers clipped recipes from paper board cylinders of oatmeal, from the backs of chocolate chip bags, and ordered recipe booklets from Betty Crocker and Jello. Some of those recipes stand the test of time because manufacturers just keep putting them on the packages, like the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe. But others are lost to the ages because there was no where else to get them. It's in that spirit that I'm bringing you these cookies from the back of the Trader Joe's Rolled Oats bag. (And we all know how transitory products can be at Trader Joe’s.)
So, oatmeal cookies. But not just oatmeal, Gluten-Free Oatmeal Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip.

Is it wrong to be thinking about Christmas cookies in October? Every year holiday decorations seem to appear in stores earlier and earlier. I'm always that person who complains and shakes her head. Why can't we enjoy fall and give Halloween and Thanksgiving their due before Christmas barges in and takes over? But then again, I don't have kids yet, so Halloween passes by without much notice and for me Thanksgiving is more about the whole meal, so I'm giving myself a pass. It's ok to be thinking about Christmas cookies right now.
