We Tried Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Yellow Mini Sheet Cake
with Chocolate Frosting! I've been on alert for Trader Joe's Yellow Mini Sheet Cake with chocolate frosting after seeing u/aswewaltz posted it in NY on Reddit 8 days ago. Every trip, I was disappointed. But today...finally... TJ's in the PNW have been blessed with the new gluten free sheet cake. So let's cut into it!…
We Tried Trader Joe’s Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns
I was skeptical when I saw that Trader Joe's newest dumpling was teriyaki-flavored. Teriyaki in a bao? I imagined a gloopy super sweet soy-based sauce overwhelming the veg filling. But now that I've tried Trader Joe's Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns? I think it's meant to be more of a shorthand toward a sweet,…

Blue Scorcher Bakery & Cafe – Astoria, OR

Astoria, Oregon is about half an hour up the coast from Cannon Beach and may be best known as the city where the Goonies was filmed. While it’s not as cute or quaint as Cannon Beach, home of Haystack Rock, Astoria’s got a great cafe and bakery — Blue Scorcher.

We visited almost by accident since Pacific Way Bakery and Cafe in Gearhart was taking an extended Labor Day vacation when we tried to stop in. So we did a quick Google search and thanks to a Chowhound tip, kept driving north. On a corner just a couple of blocks from the building that served as the county jail in the opening sequence of the Goonies, Blue Scorcher has an assortment of pastries and breads to go along with the coffee and tea, as well as more substantial (and vegetarian) breakfast and lunch offerings. It’s a great space with light from huge windows onto the street.

The locally-roasted coffee was fine, but for me, the real standout was the food. On our weekday visit, we had the vegan breakfast burrito ($7.00?) with black beans, yams, brown rice, cilantro pesto and probably a couple of other ingredients I’m forgetting; the Huevos Scorcheros ($12) with similar ingredients, and 2 eggs on top; and a blueberry cream cheese muffin.

We really could have split the burrito and muffin and been satisfied, but when things look this good, you just want to try everything. On weekends, the breakfast menu broadens. They also have a daily pizza offering for lunch that had me wishing we’d been there just a little bit later. Though we’d already had breakfast on the day we were leaving, we stopped in again to pick up a pain rustique to take home.
