If you need a chill vibes romance, Yin Yang Love Song by Lauren Kung Jessen is the one. LKJ’s third novel features a fake dating plot between herbalist Chryssy and rock cellist Vin. It’s low angst and the relationship feels totally organic, even as both Chryssy and Vin deal with issues around burnout and the generational curse that keeps the Hua women from finding lasting love. Generational trauma takes many forms, y’all.
I think it’s LKJ’s strongest book yet, even if the music and flower metaphors were a bit much at times. I said it before, but I loved the aunties in this one. Of course, I loved the mixed rep with Chryssy, but I also loved seeing 4th/5th generation Chinese Americans portrayed. Without making too much of it in this book particularly, it’s an important slice of the overall Asian American experience that I think gets forgotten because some of us have assimilated so fully.
And if you’re like, rock cellist? You gotta hear Rihanna’s We Found Love on the cello.
