DEBUT AUTHOR. Bridgerton seems to be the most common comp for historical romance these days. But on vibes, My Lady Jane (TV) is the more apt comparison for The Trouble with Anna. Rachel Griffiths’ debut features a marriage of convenience plot instigated by the terms of Lady Anna’s grandfather’s will. She must marry in order to inherit the estate at Chatham, and not to just anyone — Julian, the Earl Ramsey himself. Anna’s determined to keep her independence by virtually any means necessary. And she’s not above a little betting on horses to raise the funds she needs.
Did I mention Anna’s quite an accomplished equestrian? This is a horse girl’s historical romance and while she’s not the first or only, it really does bring something fresh to the story. You can tell the author is a horse girl herself, and the details just add credibility to the proceedings.
The Trouble With Anna’s a push-pull slow burn with modern vibes. I mean, Anna despite the sparks between them, Anna refuses Julian’s suit, yet finds herself in clandestine kissing fights. It’s medium-ish spice and I think it’ll really appeal to newer readers who want to dip their toes into historical romance. It’s got a headstrong FMC, a somewhat non-specific historical period in England, and a bestie / partner in crime in Lady Charlotte that just makes for a ripping good time.
By the end, I was already hoping Charlotte, witty renegade and troublemaker that she is, would get her own series. The good news is book 2 is already in the works, and it *is* Charlotte’s story. Cannot wait.
AUDIOBOOK DETAILS: While I read this one as a physical book, I’m super excited for the audiobook which drops today as well. The cast includes Anais Indra Chase, Raphael Corkhill, Hannah Curtis (loved her work on the Forty Elephants!), and Shakira Shute.
