Delightfully, wildly chaotic. Lucky Seed is Crazy Rich Asians meets Succession with the off-the-wall humor of Dial A for Aunties. Justinian Huang’s Sun clan embodies a range of Asian American identity and shows us as flawed, interesting, intelligent (and not-so intelligent), sometimes diabolical people.

Roses Sun has gotten it into her head that if her favorite nephew Wayward (yes, Wayward Sun – lol) bears a son, that child will inherit the Sun family fortune, as laid down in Big Boss Sun’s will and their familial line of succession. But nothing is ever that simple, especially when you’re talking ungodly wealth. The tenuous relationships among Rose and her sisters and Wayward’s generation of cousins create mini-factions that team up against each other in what becomes a race to have a son first. It’s sometimes hard to keep track of all the players, so refer to that family tree. For Wayward’s part, he’s got other ideas and motivations to try and reunite his splintered family.
This is a summer read that accidentally got dropped in November. It’s got queer rep, it’s a bit of a love letter to LA in all its flawed glory, and it’s absolutely one of my faves of the year.
P.S. Bonus points for the unserious character names and nicknames — Wayward, Sunbern, Chinoiserie.
