What a delight! In A Ghastly Catastrophe, Veronica Speedwell and Stoker Templeton-Vane find themselves assisting in the investigation of a murder by exsanguination. One that seems to have been committed by…a vampire?! I wasn’t sure how this vampire idea was going to go, but somehow it brought an undercurrent of levity / comedy to Veronica and Stoker’s latest case. Was it the collision of the scientific and the seemingly supernatural? Or maybe it was just me, imagining witchy character Asphodel as Nadja from What We Do In the Shadows. But either way, I thoroughly enjoyed A Ghastly Catastrophe.
Ten books in, Veronica and Stoker’s relationship continues to entertain, even as her recountings breeze right past the bits a romance reader would want more of. I’ve long held that I’d love to see a J.J. Butterworth spin off, so it was fantastic to find out that not only do we see Lady Julia Grey (Deanna Raybourn’s other amateur sleuth) in A Ghastly Catastrophe, but we get a good dose of J.J., too. (More please!)
While I can’t predict Veronica and Stoker’s next case, this series proves it’s got staying power. I’m already looking forward to where their work takes them next. And if this Julia Grey cameo turns into a full on crossover, I’m here for that, too.
The audiobook is narrated (once again) by the fantastic Angéle Masters.
Deanna Raybourn is on tour to celebrate A Ghastly Castrophe, stopping tonight in Scottsdale, AZ; with Houston; St. Louis; and Richmond, VA to follow.
