I almost didn’t grab the box of Trader Joe’s Chicken Flautas. Because as awesome as chicken, jack cheese and green chile sounded, I just couldn’t get over a serving of 2 flautas having 27g of fat. Because, if they’re good, damn, you’re definitely eating two and getting the full amount. We all have choices to make for ourselves. And dangit, I brought them home.

So I’ve seen some back and forth on what differentiates a flauta from a taquito, and I used to think it was the tortilla choice. But now, I just don’t know. Trader Joe’s flautas are wrapping their filling in a nice flaky flour tortilla. And they come four to a box.
I went the air fryer route and threw two of them in for 10 minutes at 375F as directed, turning half way. You probably don’t need to, but it’s force of habit for me. It gets a little golden brown on the edge and I added cheese for visual interest, it literally DOES NOT need it. It has a good amount of cheese, but didn’t deliver a real cheese pull when I broke one in half. You can kinda get a look at the shredded chicken in the end of this last bite.

I regret to inform you, they’re tasty. I dipped mine in Greek yogurt, which I keep as a sub for sour cream. They have enough going on that I think salsa might be overkill. Now, Trader Joe’s still has its chicken taquitos as well, so you could go that route. I wonder if a beef version is in the works? I’m not sure if these are made by the same producer as their mini tacos or not, but the filling is definitely different than the chicken tacos. FWIW, the box also isn’t marked Product of Mexico like the tacos and taquitos.
Would I buy them again? If I was having a party and needed finger foods, yes. But just for me? Eh…I don’t know. I’m more of a corn tortilla taquito gal.
