Today’s lunch was Trader Joe’s new Chicken Sausage Ravioli ($4.49). I wasn’t sure what to expect exactly, but I got my answer as soon as I opened the package, because you could definitely smell the Italian sausage spices. To keep it simple, I boiled the pasta 3-4 minutes as directed and heated up the sauce in the microwave. BTW, don’t sleep on the Datterino Cherry Tomato Roasted Garlic sauce if your store is selling them separately.

So basically, the filling is chicken sausage meat with a tiny bit of ricotta and parmesan cheese. Good. Simple. And I’m guessing it’s chicken breast, since it’s a bit on the drier side, but it’s hard to tell. The ingredient list doesn’t really get into the specifics of the spices, but there’s definitely fennel seed. You might find a whole one or two in your ravioli.
The pasta is robust enough to keep that filling inside the ravioli while it cooks. Go for a medium-high simmer rather than a full on boil. A few of them came unsealed, but critically, they didn’t lose their filling. You can see the relative thickness of the pasta, enough to do its job without being too thick when you bite into it. And if you’re having a desk lunch, they’re definitely dippable. No need to stand on ceremony and eat them with a fork.

For a quick lunch, it was good with a kale and radicchio salad with oranges. At dinner I’d probably go for some oven roasted broccoli. For me, this is a 3.5-4 star. Would I buy it again? Yeah, just to mix it up, since the Vegan Spinach and Cashew are usually my go-to ravioli.
