First, let’s talk about this cover. Because from the moment I saw it months ago I had big time heart eyes for The Lady Gets Lucky. The luxe lavender and gold, the leg, her hair. I mean, gah, hello, gorgeous.
So let’s get to the book. I utterly adored it!
The Lady Gets Lucky more than delivers on its gorgeous cover with opposites attract in a sexy, seduction lessons story plus a delicious foodie subplot. I loved that both Alice and Kit had ambitions above and beyond what their stations in life dictated.
The book starts at Maddie Webster’s house party in Newport (concurrent with the action in The Heiress Hunt, book one in the series), but focuses on our shy heiress Alice Lusk and Kit Ward, the handsome charmer she enlists for help. For me, book one was just ok, and now I know why. The juiciest story from that house party was Alice and Kit!
Alice’s mother has her convinced that with such a plain face, her only asset is her dowry, and the few prospects she’s had for husbands make these lessons even more important. They cut a deal. Alice will help Kit with recipes and the menu for his supper club in exchange for lessons that’ll help her win a husband.
Shupe builds this relationship perfectly — attraction and flirtation begets friendship and mutual respect. While Alice’s confidence has been beaten into submission by her overbearing mother, it’s an absolute delight to see her bloom and embrace the advice Katherine Delafield gives her: KNOW YOUR WORTH. And Kit’s charm and swagger overlays a sweet vulnerability readers won’t be able to resist. Swoony, for sure.
I also loved that The Lady Gets Lucky also continued to fill out Nellie’s story, making her a friend and sounding board for Alice…while also setting her up for her own book? Fingers crossed. That said, it looks like book 3 is going to focus on Katherine).
As with the Rogues of Fifth Avenue series before it, Joanna Shupe continues to create female main characters committed to breaking the mold. And she pairs them with partners who wholeheartedly support them following their passions.
Love it, love it, love it.
