Trader Joe’s Corn and Cheese Arepas. They come two to a box, individually wrapped, and I opted to bake them in the oven. I should have gone the stovetop route to get that nice browning on them. And I know you’re gonna ask…yes, you can probably throw these in the air fryer and get better browning than I got in the regular oven.
The thing you need to know is, the directions also tell you to thaw them for 30 minutes before cooking. I ended up baking them for another 5 minutes to get the cheese nice and melty. If your oven is a little more high powered, you can probably get it done in the 18 minute bake time.
The corn cakes are just slightly sweet and the cheese gets a nice stretch going once it’s totally melted. For me, they were a little bit plain on their own, but definitely filling.
The big question for me was, what should you put on them? A little Googling suggests you can do guasacaca, a dipping sauce similar to chimichurri or just top them with a little bit of pico de gallo. I gave it a couple of shakes of Cholula, since it’s what I had around.
