We Tried Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Yellow Mini Sheet Cake

…with Chocolate Frosting

I’ve been on alert for Trader Joe’s Yellow Mini Sheet Cake with chocolate frosting after seeing u/aswewaltz post it in NY on Reddit 8 days ago. Every trip, I was disappointed. But today…finally… TJ’s in the PNW have been blessed with the new gluten free sheet cake.

So let’s cut into it!

The cake really is moist (sorry, but it is!). I think it’s key to check the dates when you pick one up and give yourself the best shot at the freshest cake possible. For me, the cake could do with more of the buttery/eggy flavor that makes yellow cake so tasty, but it’s still pretty good. And it’s not overly sweet. I mean it’s cake, it’s sweet, but for me anyway, it’s not crazy over the top.

The flour blend is white rice flour, brown rice flour, potato starch, cornstarch and tapioca starch. And I appreciated that this one is uses buttermilk and canola oil rather than the palm oil that shows up in so many TJ’s baked goods these days.

While the frosting might look a little dry when I’m cutting into the cake, it’s actually rich and pretty tasty. It’s legit buttercream frosting. And it’s really the star here. If you don’t have to go the gluten free route, you’ll probably stick with the chocolate cake/chocolate frosting version, but I think gluten free folks will be happy with this one.
