One of Trader Joe’s big flavors this summer is S’mores. We’ve seen it in the super popular S’mores Clusters and the S’mores Ice Cream. They’ve added one more riff on this summer favorite with Trader Joe’s S’mores Bars in the freezer section.
A graham cracker crust is topped with a brownie and a spongy marshmallow layer gently toasted to a golden brown. The package advises you to thaw them for two hours on the counter, or three in the fridge. I cut two pieces out of the 6 and they were thawed in about 35 minutes on the counter.
The graham layer provides some nice texture, but the brownie and marshmallow are the really the stars of the show. Though the package says the marshmallow is a cream layer, I liked that it was actually a little spongy vs. thawing into a marshmallow goop. I’d say the brownie is somewhere between homemade and box mix, so the chocolate flavor is good, but they’re pretty sweet.
I’m forever the person who says a lot of Trader Joe’s desserts are too sweet, but I liked these. I could even see having it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a little s’mores a la mode / sundae action. I originally thought I might add some chocolate syrup, but it really doesn’t need it.
Will I buy Trader Joe’s S’mores Bars again? Maybe. My favorite of the summer so far is the reformulated Golden Caramel Swirl Ice Cream, so I’ll probably save my dessert calories for that. But these are definitely worth checking out.
