Not that anyone in the US is doing much flying these days, but I gotta tell ya, those little bags of snack mix are pretty much a let down. Weird little Ranch-flavored thingies, honey roasted sesame sticks, maybe a couple of tiny pretzels. I’ll usually pass. Now, if flights in the States had Trader Joe’s Spicy Chakri Mix, I’d be asking my seat neighbor if they wanted theirs.
Because if you like any kind of good bar mix, you’re gonna wanna grab a bag of Trader Joe’s Spicy Chakri Mix. It’s not crazy spicy, but it does build up a little as you eat it. It would be great with that $9 beer on your flight, or the sixer in your fridge. Or a Coke. Mostly made with chickpeas and rice, the bits are actually pretty tiny, so you want to just pour them into your mouth. I wouldn’t blame you if you did it on a plane, so I’m certainly not judging if you do it at home.
So what’s the flavor? This is where it gets tough. Mostly, it’s curry leaves and whatever chile is providing the kick. The ingredient list also mentions turmeric, but that’s generally for color and doesn’t taste like much. The rest is captured in “spices,” which tells you nothing. But basically if you like Indian or South Asian flavors that provide the foundation of so many dishes — cumin, coriander, mustard seeds, curry leaves — you’re gonna like Trader Joe’s Spicy Chakri Mix.
Super crunchy with a nice spice, totally addictive. Would buy again (and again).
