They Never Learn. Delicious. Exceptional. Exceptionally delicious. If you’re tired of mediocre dudes getting away with whatever they want, please read Layne Fargo’s latest. It’s a revenge thriller for the #metoo era and beyond, in which Dr. Scarlett Clark doles out vengeance on behalf of the women of Gorman University. And for some of her targets, the comeuppance is a long time coming.
In a year where mysteries seem to be presented as thrillers, They Never Learn is a straight up dark thriller with breakneck pacing and razorwire wrapped around every chapter. There’s a particularly memorable line — I won’t spoil it for you — that our main character delivers that had me laughing gleefully and thinking, yes, girl, YES!! I WISH it was on the pre-order swag for this book!!
It’s true, Dr. Clark is a badass lit professor slash serial killer, but let’s give her her due. She’s cut more from the Killing Eve mold than the Dexter one, but fans of either show should love this book. If you listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, you might have quibbles with how things go for Scarlett, but you have to put them aside. You just have to say eff it, this one is too fun.

Layne Fargo seems to be one of those authors who’s flying just under the radar. Her debut, Temper, came out in 2019 and I loved that one, too. Check out the review.
