I never really jumped on the golden milk bandwagon, despite all the hype about the health benefits of turmeric. I’ve usually seen golden milk, known as haldi doodh, as a powdered spice mix or in the refrigerated section. Trader Joe’s Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage ($2.69 for a 32 oz. carton) is shelf-stable and lactose and dairy-free.
Although turmeric can be pretty pungent, it’s not overwhelming in Trader Joe’s Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage. Sweetened with honey, it is best enjoyed hot. It uses actual ginger juice instead of ground, so the flavor is fresher and more pronounced.
I microwaved it on the first go and it was ok, but kind of thin. Water is the first ingredient, so I guess that’s no surprise. I wasn’t wowed, but I wanted it to have more body, the way it would if you used whole milk. If you have a milk steamer and can get some froth going, that’s the way to have it. Short of that, I’d say add some full fat coconut milk to it, if you’re looking for a thicker mouthfeel.
It’s easy enough (and undoubtedly cheaper) to make golden milk at home. There are about a zillion recipes online, so I don’t know that I’d buy this again. But if you’re in a dorm, or don’t keep a fully stocked spice rack, and you’ve got to have your golden milk, Trader Joe’s Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage is a passable option.
