Summer is high time for road construction in the Pacific Northwest. Almost every weekend it seems there’s at least one major closure in Seattle– the bridges, key exits downtown, something. But one of the good things about Labor Day weekend is no planned road closures! And it was a long weekend, so I thought it was about time we got down to the bricks and mortar outpost of Skillet in Capitol Hill for a little brekky.
It’s modern diner fare with an all day breakfast & lunch menu on a quiet corner in Capitol Hill, incidentally next door to Marjorie. So those of us who first fell for Skillet because of their burgers with bacon jam, gorgonzola and arugula, you can get that, but they’ve also got a breakfast menu that covers all the bases — from a scramble to griddle cakes to pork belly with a cornmeal waffle. I mean hey, if chicken and waffles is good, why not pork belly? The egg on it was overkill for me, but maybe I’m a purist.
In addition to the usual coffee, orange juice and soda, Skillet also does a daily fruit fresca, which on our visit was strawberry, celery and basil. Delish. Prices for breakfast entrees range from $8-12 and service was friendly and efficient. Overall a good experience and we’ll be back to try a few other things on the menu — like that fried chicken sammy and maybe the Wednesday pot roast special.
