Maybe I should just start calling this the Saturday Waffle…
At long last, signs of life are final starting to emerge after a winter that seems to go on forever and ever. I shouldn’t complain – Denver has had a hell of a winter and so have folks back East — just ask Jet Blue. The cold spell we had in January wrecked citrus and gave strawberries a late start — still no sign of Rodriguez Farms from Watsonville. You know it’s a bad year when it’s the first week in March and you haven’t had any real strawberries. Yeah, I bought that ridiculously expensive basket back around Valentine’s Day, but they were marginal. But hope springs eternal…the asparagus guys are finally back at the College of San Mateo Saturday Farmers Market.
The asparagus aren’t as green as you’d expect just yet — it’s early. But I still couldn’t stop myself from buying two bunches. We’ll throw them on the grill tonight after drizzling them with olive oil and S&P.
