Who’s Your Wagamama?

>
We were being dropped off at the Sydney Opera House to see Wil Anderson — the Rock Star of Australian Comedy, according to The Age– when we passed by Wagamama. Not only was it a noodle bar, but with a name like that, I knew we’d be coming back no matter what they had. C’mon say it, “Wagamama! Wa-ga-ma-ma! Who’s your Wagamama?” I filed it away in my head and when we got back from Hamilton Island on Saturday night, it seemed like a good dinner option. We weren’t up for some fancy-schmancy dinner and noodles sounded perfect.

They don’t take reservations, but the Bridge Street location is large and we didn’t have to wait either time we had dinner. You sit at large community tables and they take your order on handheld PDAs, warning you that your food may not come out at the same time.

Chilli Beef Ramen

Even as warm as Sydney was, ramen was a perfect dinner. OJ had the Chilli Beef Ramen and I had the miso ramen — both were terrific — full of flavor with fresh ingredients. I’m no ramen aficionado, but it had me wishing we had Wagamama in the States…come to find out, it’s actually a UK-based chain that has 2 locations in the US — in Boston!

Miso Ramen: not as pretty, but it tasted good!

The menu is huge — by no means limited to just ramen — they’ve got Japanese curry (not my fave), various rice dishes like cha han (kind of a fried rice kind of thing), a couple of salads, gyoza on the side…the list goes on and on.

    >Wagamama means selfish in Japanese, like these are MY noodles and not yours. I don’t get the ramen thing. They slap you in the eye with the soup when you try to eat them. Give me a bowl of thick chewy udon any day.
